Canine Influenza Alert
May 5, 2007
Recent news reports have highlighted the emergence of canine influenza in Barry County and possibly surrounding areas.
This virus originated in horses and has recently spread to dogs as well. There have not been any cases of canine influenza virus infecting humans.
Transmission of canine influenza is airborne as well as by infected objects such as cages, people, clothing, or couches.
This disease is highly contagious and virtually every exposed dog becomes infected. Of the dogs infected about 80% will develop symptoms such as fever, cough,
and nasal discharge. These signs will be apparent within 5 days of exposure. This disease very closely mimics "kennel cough" so seeking veterinary advice
is recommended to differentiate the two viruses. Canine influenza can persist for up to 3 weeks. Prompt treatment with antibiotics is highly recommended to
reduce the risk of pneumonia. Fortunately, this virus has a very low fatality rate of less than 5%. If your pet is experiencing coughing or nasal discharge
please contact us for a health evaluation.
